The Shiant Islands

Staying on
the Isles
::
There is one simple cottage on the Shiants. It exists to support conservation work, research and the long term care of the islands. The Shiants are also a working place and anyone staying shares a responsibility to tread lightly and respect how the islands operate.

The Cottage
::

The cottage provides a practical base for those working on the islands and for a small number of conservation linked guests. It is designed for remote living and shared responsibility. Capacity is limited, facilities are simple and there is a basic kitchen.
The cottage is part of the islands’ human story and is cared for with the same principle that guides everything here: preserve what matters, improve only where it supports long term resilience, and never at the expense of the landscape and wildlife.
A Working Island
::

At times, crofters stay on the islands as part of the islands’ wider rhythm of land care. Seasonal activity matters, especially in early spring during lambing. Where stays are possible, we ask guests to be mindful that the needs of wildlife and working life come first.

Who Stays and Why
::

Those who stay typically do so because their work supports the islands: researchers, conservation partners, and small groups contributing to the stewardship of the Shiants. Limited private pre-arranged stays can also be possible throughout the year, depending on the type of visit and what else is happening on the islands.

Future Stays and How They Will Be Managed
::
We are exploring a partnership with an established booking platform that has experience managing remote stays and the practicalities that come with them, including insurance and guest stewardship. We expect this approach to begin from 2027. Until then, all enquiries should be made directly via our contact details so we can confirm suitability and availability.

Fees and Reinvestment
::
Stays involve a fee. Any income is reinvested back into the islands, supporting conservation work, maintenance of the cottage, and the local community that helps sustain the Shiants over the long term.
Enquiries
::
If you have a conservation or research related reason to stay, or you would like to propose a private stay that aligns with the islands’ priorities, please get in touch with an outline of your visit and proposed dates. We will respond when we can, and only if the request fits with the islands’ programme and constraints.
